Step 1 Warming up
  • Revision
  • T can create different situations to help Ss review how to accept or decline an invitation.
Step 2 Presentation & Practice
  • While-listening

  • T may want to have Ss close their textbooks and listen to the recording  before they look at instructions for activity 2a. Ss should try to identify the name of the person being invited in each conversation. Ss can first check their answers with a partner and then open their textbooks to see if their answers were correct. Thereafter, Ss can be instructed to circle the correct word (can or can’t), and the recording can be played again if necessary.

  • 2b
  • Play the recording again. Ask Ss to complete the chart.
  • Ss sometimes become too accustomed to taking notes and cannot remember what was said without checking their notes. In activity 2b, T may want to encourage Ss to listen carefully without taking notes. This approach can help Ss develop the skill of thinking in English.

  • Pair up, student A needs to invite his / her partner to do something. Students B needs to say “no” and give more reasons.
  • Before Ss start activity 2c, T may want to first elicit from Ss various examples of “saying no” and write these examples on the board in order to make it easier for Ss to do the activity.
  • Optional Choice:
  • Ask each S to find a different partner. Student A invites student B to do something fun together, student B needs to think about something reasons and decline the invitation.
Step 3 Presentation & Reading

  • Ask Ss to role-play the conversation, then answer the questions:
  • 1. Can Nick go to Jeff’s house on Saturday?
  • 2. Why or why not?
  • 3. Will the friends meet at last?
  • Discussion
  • Divide Ss into several groups, ask each group to make a summary about how to communicate with others politely. Tell each group that they can write down their conclusions on a piece of paper. After all the groups have finished, T can ask the groups to exchange their papers and share.
Step 4 Language points learning
  • available adj. 意思是“有空的;可获得的”,在I’m not available.这句话中,available意为“有空的”,与free意思相同,常在句中作表语。
  • available还可表示“可获得的;可用的”。
  • I’d love to, but …这个句型用来表示委婉地拒绝对方的邀请,意为“我愿意,但是……”,其中不定式符号to不能省略。
  • 常用来表示拒绝的方式还有:
  • Sorry, but I can’t. 对不起,我不能。
  • Sorry, I’m not free / available. 对不起,我没有时间。
  • I’m afraid ... 我恐怕......
  • I’m afraid ... 表示“我恐怕......”,用于礼貌地说出令人不快、失望或感到遗憾的事。常用I’m afraid so“恐怕如此”表示肯定;用I’m afraid not“恐怕不行”表示否定。
  • until conj. & prep. 表示“到……时;直到……为止”,在Oh, but Sam isn’t leaving until next Wednesday. 这句话中until作介词,它的其用法还有:
  • ①与延续性动词连用,表示动作或状态一直持续到某时为止。
  • ②与短暂性动词连用,常用于否定句,与not构成not … until结构,表示“直到……才”。
  • until还可以作连词,表示动作、状态一直延续到另一动作或状态出现。
  • catch v. 意思是“及时赶上;接住;抓住”。catch作动词,过去式为caught,catch还可表示“感染上”。catch a cold意为“患感冒”。catch的相关短语有:catch up with 跟上,赶上; catch one’s eye 引起某人注意

Teaching Reflection
The topic of this unit is just the most commonly used in our daily life, so it is very easy for students to get it. It's necessary to get the students to have some chances to show their own conversations.
