Section B(3a-Self Check)
Teaching Aims

  •     Learn to write about a friend’s problem and give advice or solutions.

Step 1 Presentation
  • 3a
  • This activity is to provide writing practice with the target language.
  • In activity 3a, the T may want to have Ss get details of the problems before offering solutions. For example:
  • A:What are your three biggest worries?
  • B:I worry about my grades.
  • A:In all of your classes.
  • B:Yes, but especially English.
  • A:Do you study with anyone else?
  • B:No, I study alone.
  • A:Do you have a private tutor?
  • B:No, I don’t.
  • A:Why not?
  • B:Private tutors are expensive, and I don’t have much money.

  • 3b
  • The activity is to let Ss use the target language in writing. In activity 3b, Ss may need assistance visualizing how they should use the structures to plan their writing. In this case, the T may want to model the activity for the class to facilitate understanding.
  • Suggested answers:
  • My friend Jenny has a problem. She has too much homework and she doesn’t know how to plan her time well. I think she should make a plan for doing her homework every day. If she can use some free time between classes and if she works on her homework as soon as she gets home, she will be able to deal with the problem.

Step 2 Writing
  • 3c      
  • The T may encourage Ss to share their writings and do the peer-correcting.
  • Suggested Answer:
  • My friend also has two other problems. To begin with, her parents are very busy and they are always too tired to spend time with her. I think she should try to help out at home more. If she does some of the housework, her parents will not be so tired. If her parents are not so tired, they will spend more time with her, and everyone will be happy.
  • The other problem is that she quarreled with her best friend a few days ago. Since it was a misunderstanding, I think she should have a talk with her best friend and try to finger things out. If they can get over their quarrel, they will not be angry with each other anymore.
  • Follow the suggestions and they’ll be more happy.

  • The activity is to let Ss use the target language to communicate.
  • The T may introduce some cultural background information about volunteer projects to Ss.
  • In the US, many high school students try to acquire volunteer experience to include in a resume or a college application. Additionally, the skills and experience acquired in a volunteer capacity may qualify a job applicant to obtain the position that he or she desires.

Step 4Self Check
The part of Self Check is to provide a comprehensive review of key vocabulary and functions presented in the unit. The T may ask Ss to do the task individually and then check answers as a class.

  • A: Oh! But if you don’t go to the party, you   
  •       will miss all the fun!

  •      parents.
  • B: I guess you’re right. I  will  talk to them tonight.

Step 5  Summary & Homework
The homework can be varied with the specific conditions.
  • Summary  The T can encourage Ss to summarize the key points of this class to help Ss consolidate the knowledge.
  • Homework:
  •   Do the exercises in students’ book.     
Teaching Reflection
This is a writing lesson.In this period,we should help the students to review the unit and tell them how to write the passage by using the structures in 3b.Before writing, the teacher can ask the students to talk about the problems and the solutions. Most students can use the adverbial clause of condition guided by “if” correctly. And most of them can fill in the blanks in 3b quickly and correctly. But some students can't complete the writing task independently, so they should do more exercises after class. Also, we can encourage the students to use their imagination to make more sentences using “if”It helps to improve the quality of their thinking.
