Teaching Procedures
Tips
Step 1 Lead in
  • The T can play a video about the New Year’s resolution to lead in the topic. Then the T can explain to Ss what it is and some popular resolutions. Ss can be encouraged to have a free talk about it. The T can use the following prompts:
  • What kinds of resolutions did the man make in the video?
  • Do you think if he keeps these resolutions?
  • What do you think of these resolutions? Are they difficult or easy to
  • keep?
  • Have you ever made similar resolutions?
  • Then the T can pre-teach some words and expressions and have Ss
  • make conversations in pairs using the target language like this:
  • S1: What are you going to do next year?
  • S2: I’m going to...
  • S1: Why do you want to do that?
  • S2: Because...
  • S1: Sounds cool/ interesting/ ... /It's not for me. How are you going to
  • do it?
  • S2: I'm going to...

Step 2Presentation & Practice
  • 1a
  • This activity is to help Ss use the target language in a different context. Ss do the task in 1a individually and the T can check answers in class. Then the T can elicit more resolutions from Ss.
  • The T can also introduce activity 1a in the following challenging way:
  • 1.Have Ss close their books.
  • 2.Tell Ss to listen very carefully and afterwards write down what they hear.
  • 3.Say very quickly: Next year, I’m going to learn to play the piano, make the soccer team, get good grades, eat healthier food, and get lots of exercise.
  • 4.Have Ss write down what they heard and compare their answers with a partner.
  • 5.Repeat the process.
  • 6.Then have Ss do activity 1a.
  • 1b
  •     The activity is to give Ss practice using the target language in conversations. The T may want to encourage Ss to ask for details during the conversation in activity 1b. For example:
  •     A: What are you going to do next year?
  •     B: Well, I’m going to take guitar lessons. I really love music.
  •     A:What kind of music? Classical?
  •     B:No, I really like country music.
  • A:Really? What is your favorite country song?
  • B:I like...Do you like country music?
  • A:It’s OK.
  • B:What are you going to do next year?
  • A: Me? I’m going to ...
  • 1c
  • This activity is to give Ss practice listening to the target language in conversations. Before Ss are asked to circle the specific resolutions in activity 1c, the T might want to ask Ss to listen to the recording and count the number of times that they hear “going to” in the conversation. After that, the T should remind Ss that the resolutions will probably be stated after “going to”
  • Then the T play the recording for the first time and Ss finish the match task in 1c individually. Then the T can check answers as a class.
  • Answers:
  • circled :1. learn to play the piano
  • get good grades
  •     2.make the soccer team
  • 1d
  •     This activity is to give Ss practice in listening for specific information. The T may want to remind Ss to listen for “going to” when they record in activity 1d how Kim, Lucy and Mike are going to accomplish their goals.
  • Answers:
  • Lucy
  • She’s going to take piano lessons.
  • Kim
  • She’s going to study hard and do her homework every day.
  • Mike
  • He’s going to practice really hard, and this summer he’s going to go to a soccer camp.
  •
  • 1e
  • The activity is to provide Ss with speaking practice using the target language. The T may want to have Ss write down five resolutions together, they should be instructed to identify how many of the resolutions are shared by two or more of Ss in the group. The T may want to elicit these resolutions in order to identify the most popular resolutions of the class.

Step 3  Language points
  • make the soccer team
Step 4  Summary & Homework
The homework can vary with the specific conditions.
  • Summary  The T can encourage Ss to summarize the key points of this class to help Ss consolidate the knowledge.
  • Homework:
  •     Preview the passage in Section B 2b.
  • Do the exercises in students’ book.
Teaching Reflection
After listening, teachers can help students to simply retell the listening materials, which is not only a phased summary of the learning content, but also can deepen students' understanding of the listening materials and help them digest and use the listening materials.
