Unit 3 Could you please tell me where the restrooms are?
Section A(Grammar Focus-4c)
Teaching Aims

  • Language goals
  •    Learn objective clause and how to ask for information politely.
  • Key words and phrases
  •    grape; central; nearby; pardon me; mail; east; go east.
  • Key sentences
  •    1. Pardon me, do you know if there’s a restaurant around here?
  •    2. Ben is wondering if there’s a bank in the shopping center.
  •    3. Helen needs to know when the bike shop closes.

Teaching Difficulties
Practice the target structurein daily speech and learn to be polite to others.

Tips
Step 1 Warm-up & Revision
  • The T can play an English song about magic words and encourage Ss to have a discussion. The T may use the prompt:
Do you often use these magic words in our daily life?
Do you think they work well?
  • The T can guide Ss to review what they have learned by asking them to describe the picture of asking way. Pay attention to the accuracy of Ss’ words and remind Ss to use the target structure:
Excuse me, do you know where I can take the subway?
Could you please tell me how to get the metro station?
  • Then Ss can be asked to make some conversations about asking for directions with partners according to the given map. Be polite!
  •    The teacher can observe Ss’ performance and offer feedback and make assessment.

Step 2 Grammar learning
  • Grammar Focus
  • The T can ask Ss to read aloud the sentences. The T can pay attention to their pronunciation. Then the T can present all the questions in two ways: direct way and indirect way so that Ss can find the rules of the target structure. For example:
  • Where can I buy some medicine?
  • Excuse me, do you know where I can buy some medicine?

  • Then the T can introduce the usage of the target grammar structure from several aspects. Focus Ss’ attention to the changes of tense and word order of the objective clause.

Step 3Presentation & Practice
  • 4a
  • The T make Ss read the sentences in 4a. Then the T can ask several questions to guide Ss to have a discussion.
  • Are these questions polite or impolite?
  • Do you think these questions are more likely asked between friends or between strangers?
  • 4a
  • Ss finish the tasks in 4a and check their answers in pairs to correct them. The T can invite some Ss to share their answers.
  • Suggested answers:
  • Could you please tell me where I can buy some grapes or other fruit?
  • Excuse me, do you know how this CD player works?
  • Can you tell me how to get to the Central Library?
  • I wonder if the Italian restaurant nearby is open on Mondays.
  •   
  • 4b
  • Ss finish the task in 4b and then communicate with their partners.
  • Then the T can invite some Ss to share their answers in class and the T can make assessments.
  • Suggested Answers:
  • 2.Excuse/Pardon me, could you please tell me where the post office is?
  • I’d like to know where I can buy some stamps.
  • Do you know where the nearest post office is?
  • Excuse/Pardon me, could you please tell me when the bike shop  closes?
  •   Do you happen to know when the bike shop closes?
  •   I’d like to know when the bike shop closes.
  • I’m wondering if there’s a bank in the shopping center.
  •   Do you know whether there’s a bank in the shopping center?
  • Could you please tell me if there’s a bank in the shopping center?

  • 4c
  • The T can guide Ss to figure out some situations. For the less active Ss, the T can give some prompts like these:
  • To visit a local place of interest
  • To get money
  • To buy some gifts for friends
  • To go to a shop selling CDs/clothes/books etc.
  • To ask the way to a local address to visit a friend

  • 4c
  •     Then Ss finish the task in 4c and check their answers in pairs to polish their answers. The T may invite Ss to role play according to the questions they write.

Step 4 Summary & Homework
  • Summary  The T can encourage Ss to summarize the key points of this class to help Ss consolidate the knowledge.
  • Homework:
  •     Preview the new words and phrases in Section B(1a-1e).
  • Do the exercises in students’ book.     
The homework can vary with the specific conditions.
Teaching Reflection
  • After they learn the main structure in the grammar focus frame,students can practice grammar by using what they have learned in different activities.And we'd better give them some written work after speaking and reading.So as homework, we can ask them to write a conversation about “asking and telling the way to the museum politely”.
