Teaching Procedures
Tips
Step 1 Warm up
  • Listen to a song
  • T plays the song I remember and asks Ss to listen to the song together. T may want Ss to recall the happy memories in junior high school through the song.
  • Free Talk
  • T may want Ss to walk around in the classroom and interview each other the activities they remember in junior high school.
  • T can teach Ss the English expressions of different activities before they start to interview.
Step 2 Presentation & Reading
  • Pre-reading
  • Before reading, T may want Ss to make predictions about what the writer may remember in junior high school. Ss can choose from the options given on PPT P8, or they can say something else.
  • While-reading
  • Ask Ss to read the poem quickly and answer the questions:
  • What kind of writing is it?
  • How many stanzas are there?
  • What’s the title of the poem?
  • Let Ss read part 1-6 and answer the questions:
  • What things does the writer remember?
  • What’s the writer’s feeling?
  • T can use a diagram or a thinking map to help Ss make a summary.
  • Ask Ss to underline and number the things the writer remember.
  • Ask Ss to read the last two paragraphs and think about “How does the writer feel now?”
  • Ask Ss to read part 7-8 and fill in the blanks.
  • Answers:
  • it’s been three years
  • keep my cool
  • the school trees and the flowers; our kind and caring teachers
  • Presentation
  • 3a
  • Ask Ss to read the passage and answer the questions.
  • Answers: 1. This is a poem.  2. The main subject is the writer’s memories of school over the last three years.  3. The writer is a student who is just about the graduate.
  • T reads the poem with Ss sentence by sentence and explain the key words and phrases to Ss.
  • 3b
  • Ask Ss to read the poem again and write words that rhyme with the words in the box of 3b.
  • Because there no punctuation marks, so before reading out loud, ask Ss where they think they should take a breath, where they should pause and where they should run on.
