Teaching Procedures
| Tips
| Step 1 Revision & Free Talk
| | - The T can present some pictures to guide Ss to review some ways
- to learn English. Ss can review what they learned from four sides:
listening/speaking/reading/writing
- The T can ask Ss to talk about their learning habits. The T can use these prompts:
- Do you have any good learning habits?
- How can we become successful learners?
| | Step 2 Presentation & Reading
| | - To prompt Ss to think about good learning habits across all subjects, the T may have Ss work in groups instead and have the groups share their views with the class.
- 1.Being attentive in class.
- 2.Having an interest in the subject.
- 3.Reading the relevant text before a lesson.
- 4.Reviewing what has been taught after each lesson.
- 5.Asking questions in class.
- 6.Having a study partner/buddy.
- To read a passage quickly to get an idea of what it is about is to skim the passage. The T can give Ss some tips to help them skim a passage effectively.
- To skim a passage, you should read:
- the heading and sub-heading
- the first sentence in each paragraph
- Creating an interest in what they learn
- Practicing and learning from mistakes
- Developing their study skill
- Task 2 Dividing and paying attention to the structure
- The T make Ss read the passage carefully and finish the task in 2c. For some Ss in need, the T can change the questions to make them easier to understand. These questions are for reference:
- 1.According to the writer, what kind of ability is everyone born with?
- 2.Why is it a good idea to connect something you need to learn with something you're interested in?
- 3.What's the Chinese translation for "use it or lose it" and "practice makes perfect"?
- 4.Are good learners afraid of making mistakes? What do they do with the mistakes?
- 5.What study skills does the writer talk about? List them.
- 6. Why do many people say learning is a lifelong journey?
- No, he doesn’t. No, I disagree. Because whether or not you can do this well depends on your learning habits.
- This is because studies show that if you are interested in something, your brain is more active and it is easier for you to pay attention to it for a long time. You will not also get bored.
- Use it or lose it: If you stop doing something, you will forget
- Practice makes perfect: If you do something again and again, you
- will become very good at it.
- They learn from mistakes, and they are not afraid of making mistakes.
- Take notes by writing down key words or by drawing mind maps.
- Look for ways to review what they have learned, for example, read their notes every day or explain the information to another student.
- For some high-level Ss , the T can provide some extended questions for them to talk about so that they can improve their speaking skills and practice their logical capability. For example:
- 1.Besides the ability to learn, what other abilities do you think everyone is born with?
- 2. When people say “you’re never too old to learn”, what do they mean?
- The T should ask Ss to bring their dictionaries to class in advance and then make them do the task in 2d. The types of dictionaries are not limited. Ss can be allowed to bring all kinds of dictionaries so that the T can guide them to compare the advantages and disadvantages of all kinds. The T may also review parts of speech before ask Ss to complete the activity.
- ·The brain is one of the most important parts of the body.
- ·Draw a line to connect these two points.
- ·Don't expect to learn a new skill overnight.
- ·It is important to pay attention in class.
- ·At the end of every day, I try to review the new words I learned that day.

- ·Scientists believe that only humans have the ability to learn a complex language.
- ·My brother is active and enjoys sports.
- ·Her mother wisely advised her wot to give up studying English.

| | Teaching Reflection
| In this period, the most important thing is reading. It is a good time to train the students' ability of reading quickly and efficiently.Usually we do some work to deal with new words and phrases before reading. While reading, students should learn to catch the main and the most important ideas as quickly as they can. They must learn some new words and new language items. They are supposed to be able to use dictionaries to look up the new words. They need to have reading strategies and the teacher should teach them these. After reading, we can talk about the reading passage and discuss some questions to check how well the students learn from the passage.
