When Tony took up running as a hobby he was 42 years old. Now 42 years later he's a national champion and a world record holder.
He never imagined at the age of 84 this is where he'd be, but then he doesn't meet many people in their 80s who are out training four times a week.
"I can see it's a bit unusual, yes. But it's been my life," he told the reporter.
The retired officer runs at a track near his home in Leeds.
At an event in Italy last month he set a world record in the 80 metres hurdles (跨栏)with a time of under 17 seconds. But he sees no reason to slow down and his ambition is still to be competing when he passes a hundred.
"I probably won't be doing a crouch start (蹲式起跑),but it's only 16 years away," he joked. Like anyone his age, he's had health problems. He's had a string of severe heart attacks, but doctors have told him as long as it makes him feel good, he should carry on running.
"I can't let my heart get in the way of my training. When I am sprinting I have to give it my absolute all. My heart is the last thing on my mind." he said.
He trains every other day, dances and plays hockey and he recently cuts down on alcohol and chocolate. He said, "I've heard alcohol can lead to dementia and I don't want that. I've cut down to one glass of wine every other day. I now have to stay as fit as I can be to keep up my lifestyle."
Tony's next birthday is next September. And the first thing he wants to do is become the world's fastest 85-year-old.

Too much screen time for kids can lead to poor health the American Heart Association (AHA) says. A scientific statement published by the AHA in the medical journal Circulation said screen time from smartphones, tablet computers and other devices can lead kids to a sedentary(惯于久坐不动的) lifestyle ,increasing the possibility that they grow up as overweight or obese(肥胖的).
The AHA is the latest organization urging parents to limit how much time their kids spend in front of screens. It recommends children get one to two hours of screen time each day. Although television viewing among children and teens has dropped, the use of smartphones and tablet computers has surged.
“Although the mechanisms(机制) linking screen time to obesity are not entirely clear, there are real concerns that screens influence eating behaviors, mainly because children don’t notice when they are full when eating in front of a screen,” said Tracie Barnett, a researcher at the INRS-Institut Armand-Frappier Research Centre,in a statement.
Barnett, one of the authors of the statement, also urges parents to keep screens out of kids’bedrooms, raising the fear that too much screen time can affect sleep.
Many studies have warned about the potential (潜在的) negative effects of too much screen time. Last year, a study from researchers at San Diego State University(SDSU) found nearly half of teens who spent five or more hours in front of screens every day experienced long periods of hopelessness or sadness.
Apple, who makes the iOS mobile platform, plans to introduce new tools to devices to help users cut back on screen time. As for iOS 12,iPhones will include a screen time feature where users can control and review how they spend time on their mobile devices. Another company that makes the Android platform will introduce “digital well-being” tools such as screen time limits and a “wind down” option to encourage users to put down their phones before bed.
28. Which can replace the underlined word “surged” in paragraph 2?
A. Increased suddenly.        B. Decreased slowly.
C. Stayed the same.        D. Lost the balance.
29. How do screens influence children’s eating behavior?
A. By changing the time they eat.        B. By changing their taste for food.
C. By influencing how fast they eat.        D. By influencing their feeling of fullness.
30. What effect did too much screen time have in SDSU’s study?
A. It affected children’s sleep.        B. It led to children’s obesity.
C. It resulted in diet problems.        D. It negatively influenced moods.
31. What will Apple do to deal with the screen time problem?
A. Reduce its products’ battery life.
B. Provide a screen time feature.
C. Introduce “digital well-being” tools.
D. Add a “wind down” option to its products.

We humans love to stare into our smart devices. We gaze for hours-about 10 hours and 39 minutes a day-at our computers, smartphones, tablets and televisions. Is all this staring bad for us? It might be mainly because as we stare at our devices we are exposing ourselves to blue light.
Blue light is a type of electromagnetic(电磁的) radiation with a very short wavelength that produces a high amount of energy. While it’s true that light can damage our eyes under certain circumstances, there’s no scientific evidence suggesting that blue light is harmful to our eyes. But many people still think it is, which is why blue-light-blocking glasses are so popular. So do the glasses work?
“Everyone is very concerned that blue light may be causing damage to the eye, but there’s no evidence that it may be causing serious damage,” Dr. Rahul Khurana, clinical spokesman for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, told Business Insider.
Blue light exposure is nothing new. In fact, the sun is the largest source of blue light. Moreover, blue light is also present in LED light. But if blue light isn’t harmful, then why are we constantly rubbing our eyes when we’re looking at our screens? The answer is eyestrain(眼疲劳): More than 60 percent of people experience eye problems associated with digital eyestrain. And blue light, it seems, isn’t the cause. Instead, our eyes are so strained because most of us blink less when we stare at our digital devices. So if eyestrain is the issue, blue-light-blocking glasses are probably of little use.
32. What do we know about blue light?
A. It is a kind of nuclear radiation.
B. It has the shortest wavelength.
C. It may come from electronic devices.
D. It consumes a great deal of energy.
33. What causes the popularity of blue-light-blocking glasses?
A. Evidence of their benefits to eyes.
B. Belief in blue light's harmful effect.
C. Widespread use of smart devices.
D. Scientific understanding of blue light.
34. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?
A. Blue light exposure is hardly avoidable.
B. Eye problems are not easy to deal with.
C. Blue light may connect with tired eyes.
D. Rubbing eyes makes people strained.
35. According to the text, wearing blue-light-blocking glasses may be________.
A. tiring           B. harmful              C. useless        D. beneficial
