Step 1 Lead-in
  • Lead-in
  • Divide students into several groups. Ask each group to find out all the sentences using the past perfect tense from 1a to 3c.
Step 2 Presentation &Grammar
学习Grammar Focus这个过程中,教师可采用任务型教学和小组合作法,使学生在讲授、启发的基础上,让学生通过小组合作完成学习任务,达到教学目标,同时培养学生的合作意识和创新精神。
  • Presentation
  • Read Grammar Focus
  • ① Read aloud the sentences in the grammar frame. Find out the sentences in simple past tense and the past perfect tense.
  • ② Compare the above two past tenses.
  • ③ The teacher gives more sentences as examples.Get the students to sum up and learn the past perfect tenses. Remind the students of the verbs and the order of the two actions.
  • 4a
  • Ask students to make sentences using by the time or before.
  • Students make full sentences on their own, the teacher reminds them of the tenses. Get students to check their answers in pairs.
  • Answers:
  • 1.By the time Mary got up,Tim had already gone into the bathroom.
  • 2.Before I put cream in the coffee, the coffee had become cold.
  • 3.By the time I got to school, the teacher had collected the math homework.
  • 4.I had completed the work for my boss before the workday ended.
  • 5.The movie had started before I arrived at the cinema.
  • 6.By the time I got home from my language course, my mother had finished making the apple pie.

  • Ask students to fill in the blanks with the correct forms of the words in the box.
  • First, ask students to write the past participle form for each word and phrase in the box of 4b. Then, ask them to fill in the blanks using the correct words or phrases.

  • arrived at;6.had gone into.
  • 4c
  • Write and guess
  • ① Show the half sentences and ask different students to say their sentences. Make as many sentences as they can.
  • ② Get the students to write two true sentences and one imaginary sentences. Ask some students to read out their sentences. Let others to guess which sentence is imaginary. Tell the reasons.
  • Answers will vary.
Step 3Language points learning
  • by the end of  在(某时间点)以前
  • by the end of 含有“不迟于”的意思。通常情况下,根据by the end of后接的时间的不同,主句选用相应的时态:
  • (1) 接将来的时间,主句用一般将来时。
  • (2) 接现在的时间,句子用现在完成时。
  • (3) 接过去的时间,句子用过去完成时。

  • The T can encourage Ss to summarize the key points of this class to help Ss consolidate the knowledge.

Teaching Reflection
  • In this lesson, teacher gives the students enough time to practice the past perfect tense, which can not only consolidate the language goals learned in this lesson, but also open up students' thinking. Teachers should improve students' ability to use the language to solve the practical problems too.
