一、书面表达

I always think of my mother as a superhero, because she never runs out of room in her heart for anyone or anything.
I could write about all of the wonderful things she has done, but I want to focus on one project she does every year that has shaped my whole family and everyone around us: She saves money, and she puts it in a little jar (罐子) that we refer to as “The Charity Jar”. Every year, she takes this money and puts it toward something—an act of kindness, anything that can help someone. Sometimes, she buys something for an organization that needs it.
If you ask her about this tradition, she will tell you that she is carrying on something that her mother used to do around the holidays. If you ask anyone else who knows her, however, they will tell you that she has a huge heart. She manages to get our whole family involved (参与) in this movement every year. Last year, she helped an organization where I volunteered—Ruth’s Place—a homeless women’s shelter in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
I had been helping a professor run a writing workshop in the shelter when I noticed the wish list on the wall: warm clothes, a coffee maker and supplies. I told my mom, and within a day, she had already asked if our family wanted to help Ruth’s Place. We all agreed and decided that the coffee maker and supplies would be the best things for our family to work on together.
A few days later, Mom found a coffee maker online, and showed it to us. With a few clicks, it was on its way. She also baked(烘焙) fresh chocolate cupcakes for the women in the shelter. We gathered the rest of the supplies and called the shelter to find a day when we could deliver them.

Everyone’s first job is special, because you gain useful experience that you can use in other positions in future. It also teaches you about the value of money.
When I was about sixteen years old, I wanted to buy albums of my favourite band, but I did not have any money. This was because the money my parents gave me was just enough to get by. I had to find a part-time job in order to purchase the music I wanted.
Luckily, I found that there were many old people who needed help in my neighbourhood. And I chose the oldest person I knew, Mrs. Hudson, who was over eighty years old, and could not tend her garden anymore. She had flowers, a grass lawn, and some tomato plants. I knocked on her door, trying to build up enough courage to ask her for work. She answered that indeed she needed help in her garden.
My first job was to pull out weeds. I got down on my knees and began to pull them out  one by one in her front yard and backyard. Finishing this tiring and boring task, I mowed her lawn front and back. That was the first day of my job, and it took me about two hours. After that, I was paid ten dollars for my work. It was less than I thought, but at least I had earned my first money.
After getting that ten dollars, I intended to go to the supermarket to buy my favourite album. I chose a nice morning to do it because I knew it would be a memorable moment when I was able to buy what I liked through my efforts. But on the way to supermarket, I happened to see my mom “working” on the opposite side of the road. Actually, I had never seen how she worked before, I just knew she was a saleswoman.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Under the burning sun, my mom was distributing leaflets (分发传单) to passers-by, sweating all over.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Then I continued making my way to the supermarket, and suddenly a good idea occurred to me.

3.(22-23高一下·广西河池·期末)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The only real job I’d ever had was as manager of a local cafe. That was a rich experience, but I will never forget one thing.
Our family has a tradition of running cafes. When I was a kid, I had the dream of running a coffee shop independently. The third year after I graduated from college, the opportunity came.
My father took over a café shop in the central city, far from home. Maybe there was no suitable person to manage. My father did offer me full responsibility from decoration to business. Winter coming after fall, I was busy, painful and happy.
So tired as I was, I bothered myself to open up my café shop on the freezing morning. With many customers streaming in, I knew another long business day began. And I had to serve far into the night.
As I rushed among the tables, suddenly, a voice asked if I could mind a child. I was quite angry but I could tell the man was quite desperate (绝望的). So I had to make a deal with him that if he wanted his son to stay and wait for him, he had to buy something in the shop.
This was quite hard for the man to do. I could tell he was quite poor by the way he was dressed. It looked as if he had tried to come in his best clothes. But they still looked a bit old and worn out as if he had often worn them, just to make himself look best. Looking down I could see his shoes were also a bit torn and the heels (鞋后跟) were in a terrible state. I thought he was going for a job interview. In the end he bought a small box of cookies for his little son and seated him down in the corner. I could tell the boy was feeling down and only could do with a bit of cheering up.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Seeing that the kid sat there, I was a bit worried.

It was terribly cold and nearly dark on the last evening of the old year, and the snow was falling down. In the cold and the darkness, a poor boy was selling goods door to door. He wanted to make some money to pay for his school in the coming new term. He was walking helplessly on the road when he found that he had only one dime (一角钱) left. He was hungry so he decided to beg for a meal at the next house.
Lights were shining from every window. Every house must have a family getting together to enjoy a big dinner happily. He was afraid that he would disturb their warm moment. But he was extremely hungry. With his heart beating fast, he slowly put his hand on the door. It was the first time that he had begged for something. He lost his courage when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal, he just asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so she brought him some milk and bread. He swallowed them down in a flash, and then asked, “How much do I have to pay you?”
“You don’t need to give me anything,” she replied. “Mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness.” He said, “Thank you, and I will never forget about your kindness.” As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but it also increased his faith in life. No one knew that he was about to give up and quit before this point.
Years later, the woman became seriously ill. The local doctors could not figure out a proper treatment. They had no option but to send her to the big city, where specialists could be called in to study her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly, now a famous expert in this field, was having an urgent meeting with his colleagues in the consultation room (咨询室), listening carefully to the report of her condition.
注意:1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

There was no sign that the earthquake was coming.
A 7.8 magnitude (震级) quake almost flattened the city, killing over thousands of lives in less than a few minutes.
In the midst of destruction and chaos, a father left his wife securely at home and rushed to the school where his son Daniel was supposed to be, only to discover that the building was as flat as a pancake.
After the upsetting shock, he remembered the promise he had made to Daniel: “No matter what, I’ll always be there for you!” And tears began to fill his eyes. He looked at the pile of ruins that once was the school. Everything looked hopeless, but he kept remembering his commitment to his son.
He began to concentrate on where he walked his son to class at school each morning. Remembering his son’s classroom would be in the back right corner of the building, he rushed there and started digging through the stones and bricks.
As he was digging, other anxious parents arrived, heartbroken, shouting desperately: “Mary!” “Sam!”
Some other well-meaning parents tried to pull him off what was left of the school, saying: “It’s too late!” “They’re dead!” “You can’t help!” “Go home!” “Come on! There’s nothing you can do here!” “You’re just going to make things worse!”
To each parent he responded with one line: “Are you going to help me now?”
And then he continued to dig for his son, stone by stone.
Some firefighters showed up and tried to pull him off the school’s ruins, saying, “Fires are breaking out, and explosions are happening everywhere. You’re in danger. We’ll take care of it. Just go home!” To which this loving, determined father asked, “Are you going to help me now?”
The fire chief replied, “You’re angry and worried. I get it. But you are not helping by staying here. Just go home. We will help you find your son!” To which he replied, “But I promised my son I’ll always be there for him.”

Becoming the captain of the cheerleaders is a significant accomplishment when you’re in Grade Eight, about to conclude your school journey with a sense of glory. At least, that’s what I had expected. The process of counting the votes only took about five minutes, but for me, it felt like an hour and a half. As Coach Williams prepared to announce, I inched to the edge of my seat ready to spring to my feet as soon as she said my name.
“Girls,” she began, “Laura Shaw has been elected Captain of the Maplewood High School cheerleading team.” A great cheer was heard throughout the gym, but all I could do was to contain my hysteria (歇斯底里). How could this be? Was everyone blind? Didn’t they realize I had my heart set on this?
As everyone cheered for Laura, I didn’t move a step toward her. It felt like she had stolen my moment and my dream. After a few minutes, I walked over to Laura with shaky legs and softly said, “Good luck, Laura.” in a whisper that barely masked my urge to cry.
Laura hugged me close and said,“I wasn’t expecting this, Annie. What a shock.”I didn’t lash out at (痛斥) her but in my heart I wanted to do just that. Who was she to claim the title I had worked three years to earn?
All the way home, I sobbed. There was no way I was going to stay on a team so blind they couldn’t see who should be the captain. The next morning, however, I went to my closet and took out my uniform. Once holding it close to me in my hands, I knew I couldn’t quit. As heartbroken as I was, my true love was cheering with my teammates.
How very hard it was to go to that first practice after Laura had been named captain. When I arrived, Coach Williams asked me to take three of the new girls and work with them on our basic drills. Laura was assigned three new girls as well.
Just then Laura suggested all eight girls working together, and though I hesitated, I eventually agreed.

At the award ceremony, Laura won her captain’s award, and then came the final “Cheerleading Spirit Award”.

I grew up in southeastern Michigan. I was a fan of Detroit Tigers, a famous baseball team, as a young boy.
My childhood dream was to be like my hero, Al Kaline, and someday play for the Tigers. My Dad would take me to Tiger Stadium several times a year and my hero Al Kaline would never let me down. We never attended a game that he didn’t get at least one hit.
I was crazy about baseball. If there was a game in my high school, I was never absent. I kept practising so that I could achieve my dream of playing for the Tigers, and I was doing well at each level of play. Later, I got a chance to sign up for a strong American Legion baseball program. There I met our coach, Bob Ohm, who knew a lot of baseball and taught each of us the basics as well as more advanced baseball skills. With Bob Ohm’s help and my hard work, I had set new records in many baseball championships.
My dream to be like my hero seemed to draw near. One summer, I went up to play the final season in Marinette. There were scouts who came to find the best players. This was it! My big chance!
Well, as the game progressed I hit the ball very well getting five hits in the game. Unfortunately, I also made four mistakes. The final mistake actually drew laughter from the crowd.

After hitting the button of an alarm clock a couple of times, Sarah rushed to get dressed. She had a big presentation at work, and she needed the caffeine more than ever. She grabbed (抓住) her keys, rushed out of the door, and made her way to the familiar coffee shop.
As she joined the line of cars in the drive-through (免下车的餐馆), Sarah couldn’t help but feel the familiar rush of anticipation. The smell of roasted coffee beans and the thought of having a cup of coffee was her little daily enjoyment.
The line of cars went forward slowly, and soon, Sarah found herself at the drive-through window. She reached for her purse to pay, but before she could hand over her credit card, the cashier smiled and said, “Your coffee has been covered by the car ahead of you.” “Really?” she asked, both surprised and grateful. The cashier nodded. “Yes, the woman in the car ahead wanted to pay it forward today. Enjoy your coffee!”
With a warm smile, Sarah accepted the free coffee and drove away. The unexpected act of kindness was in her mind as she drank the delicious coffee. It put a spring in her step and a smile on her face, making her presentation a little less worrying.
As she exited the drive-through, Sarah glanced in her rearview (后视的) mirror at the next car approaching the coffee shop window. An idea began to form in her mind. Maybe she could do the same, pay it forward and brighten someone else’s morning. She decided to stick around, park her car and go back into the coffee shop. She approached the cashier and said, “I’d like to pay for the coffee of the person in the car behind me.” The cashier smiled and nodded, processing the payment. Sarah knew she had just started a chain of kindness, and she felt a warm sense of satisfaction.

One afternoon after school, Mary and her brother, Keith, were eating at a cafe near their home. That afternoon, they had to share their table with another person. That person was a young lady in her twenties. After eating, she went to the restroom. Without realizing, she had left her cellphone on the table. Five minutes later, she came out and walked out of the cafe without looking back.
Mary saw the cellphone on the table. She quickly told Keith, “Keith, the girl left behind her cellphone.”Keith looked at the cellphone. It took his breath away. It was one of the latest models on the market. Keith had always wanted a cellphone. But his parents had told him, “You don’t need one. You can always use the house phone.” He stared at it for some minutes. Then, he said slowly, pausing on every word, “I want to take the cellphone.” Mary could not believe her ears. She only stared at her brother, “You can’t! What if the owner comes to look for it?”
After making the decision, Keith quickly got the cellphone and put it in his schoolbag. Then, he took Mary’s hand and led her out of the cafe quickly.
Once back home, Keith locked his room door with trembling (颤抖的) hands. Inside his room, he took out the piece of beauty. Oh, he liked it so much. He had his own cellphone. Soon, he was polishing it happily. But Mary told him, “Keith, you cannot keep the cellphone. What will you tell our father about this? He will ask you how you got the cellphone.” Keith said quickly, “I will say a friend lent it to me.” Mary said, “Now you are lying too. Oh dear! When had Keith turned so dishonest?”
Then, Mary saw a house phone number on the cover of the cellphone. “This is the girl’s phone number. Why don’t we just call this number? We will talk to her and ask her to come and take back her cellphone,” she was trying to talk some sense into him.

Christmas Eve, my husband and our three children gathered in the living room. The presents were wrapped under the tree. Everything was perfect except one thing was missing the star on the top of the Christmas tree.
Lilly and Brandon were born first, and decorating the tree soon became the focus of our Christmas traditions. We would lift one of the kids up high to put the star on top. “The star that shone with promise,” I told the kids. The two kids took turns to do this important job.
Then Finn was born. He was a happy baby, until Matt and I noticed something odd when he was 14 months old. He didn’t interact with us anymore. Then, his autism (自闭症) diagnosis came out. How to be the family Finn needed us to be? In so many situations, I didn’t have an answer.
Finn turned three years old, and I hoped he was ready to take part in adding the final touch to our tree. It would be his first time, a chance to connect with us through this tradition. Matt took the older kids’ hands and stepped back to give us some room. I took the star from its box. “Here, Finn,” I said, putting the star in his little hand. “It’s your turn to put this on the top of the tree!” I went to pick him up. Finn didn’t seem to understand. He threw the star on the floor and twisted in my arms.
“Finn,” I said, “It’s okay, honey.” Still, he fought me. Finally, I put him down. I wanted to try again, but he ran away. “Finn!” I called after him, but he ignored me.
“Give him time,” Matt said. It didn’t feel right to let Lilly or Brandon place the star instead. It was Finn’s turn, and I didn’t want to leave him out. So, the tree remained starless that Christmas. The next Christmas too. And the one after that. waiting for Finn. This Christmas, however, I simply gave up trying and left the star in the box somewhere in the basement.
