The topic of the part is “Read about a bet between two wealthy men”.
The section is a play, which is the first play students meet since senior high school. So students are guided to pay more attention to its inner meaning, essential factors (such as time, place, heroin or hero, the plot) and the features of language. Meanwhile, role play is also helpful to improve the students’ pronunciation, stress and tone.
This play is partly selected from American writer Mark Twain, whose language feature is realistic and ironic. The Million Pound Bank Note is one of his realistic and ironic novels. The play tells that two old and wealthy brothers Rodrick and Oliver hit an amazing idea that if an intelligent and honest man who  had nothing or nobody to rely on but a million bank note was trapped in London, what would be he and his life ? The two brothers argued about it and couldn’t convince each other, so they found such a person to make a bet. Henry Adams was just right. They gave him the million pound bank note to him. The following results made them and readers quite surprised. Henry could get free dishes, free accommodation, free clothing and higher social status because of people’s ingratiation. Besides, he even received a passion from a beautiful lady, the bank interest about 30,000 and a decent job. He lived a happy life from then on. The writer described the ugly image of people facing the million pound bank note with the cartoon writing skill and uncovered the cruel reality that money is everything in the capitalist regime.

Step 1 Lead in---Small talkWe know money is very important. We can use money do a lot of things. So what would you do if you had a million-pound bank note ?I can use it to buy my favorite things like a mansion, a luxurious car, investment for more money, and help people in need, ...
Step 2 Before reading---About Mark Twain
The Million Pound Bank Note is partly selected from the works by American writer Mark Twain. Now let’s know more about the greatest writer in the 19th century.    Mark Twain(1835-1910), once said, “To believe yourself to be brave is to be brave; it is the only essential thing.”     His main novels: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer(《汤姆索亚历险记》)                  The Prince and the Pauper (《皇子与贫儿》)                  The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn  (《哈克贝利费恩历险记》)
Step 3 While reading --- Task 1
Read the text and answer the following questions.Q1: What bet did Roderick and Oliver make ?     Whether a man has a million-pound bank note could live a month in London.Q2: How did Henry come to Britain ?    By accident. He was sailing out the bay when he was carried out to sea by a strong wind and was spotted by a ship for England.
Q3: How does Henry want the brothers to help him ?He wants the brothers to offer him work.
Q4: Why do you think Henry does not want the brothers’ charity ?
Because he is an honest man and he wants to earn his living by working hard.
Q5: Why do you think the brothers chose Henry for their bet ?Because Henry is penniless, honest and can’t get any help from someone.
Step 4 While reading --- Task 2
According to the text, think about what kind of person Henry was and give the reasons.
  • He was honest. Evidence: 1) Well, I can’t say that I have any plans. Well, to be honest, I have none.    2) I don’t want your charity. I just want a job that earns an honest income.   3) He promised not to open the envelope until 2 o’clock.                  2. He was hard-working. Evidence: Could you offer me work here? I just want a job that earns an honest income.
Step 5 Post reading --- Study the language
Understand implied meaning or feelingSome sentences have an implied meaning which is not clearly stated. This implied meaning often indicates people’s feelings, attitudes, or motives. You can find this implied meaning by looking at the context. You have to read between the lines because the real messages are often hidden beneath the literal meaning.
  • Read these sentences and describe Henry’s feelings using suitable adjectives.1) Who? Me, sir ?(surprised)2) Well, I can’t say that I have any plans. As a matter of fact, I landed in Britain by accident.(honest)3) I’m afraid I don’t quite follow you, sir.( puzzled )4) Well, it may seem lucky to you but not to me ! if this is your idea of some kind of joke, I don’t think it’s very funny. (angry)5) Well, why don’t you explain what this is all about ?(confused)
  • Explain what the speakers mean by saying these sentences.1) I went to the American consulate to seek help, but...Anyway, I didn’t dare to try again.  The American consulate didn’t give him any help and might insult him, which made him gave up asking for help form American consulate forever.2) You mustn’t worry about that. It’s an advantage.  We would help you. We want to find a person like you who can’t also seek any help.3) What luck ! Brother, what luck !  Roderick is very excited about finding such a right person.4) Oh, this is silly.
Now that you give it to me, I can open it. It’s silly of you to ask me to open until 2 o’clock.

Step 7 Critical thinking
Some people think money is very important, please write an essay with the topic “Is money is important?” and present your own idea.                          Money is not everything Everybody wants to get wealth. In today’s material world, making money or becoming wealthy symbolizes a person’s success and capability. Many people just make every effort, pay any price to attain greater wealth. With money, they can buy nice, large apartments in nice neighborhood. With money they can own luxurious cars. Wealth seems to bring all happiness in life. But is wealth the only road to happiness? Not really. There are many things in the world, which are beyond the means of money, such as friendship, love, health and knowledge. People are so preoccupied with struggling for money that they have no time or would not take the time to form or maintain friendship. What happiness can they feel living as lonely miserable creatures without love or friends in the world even if they accumulate tremendous wealth? In my opinion, people can’t do anything without money, but money is not everything. What money will bring you depends on your personal belief and goal in life. If you are kind enough to help others, especially the poor, money is a good thing to you. With it, you can do much more for the benefit of people and your country, and it will add to your own happiness. If you want money just for your own needs, you’ll never be satisfied or happy. In a word, you should have money spent for more people. Only then can money be the source of your happiness.
Step 8 Homework
4 students in a group, one acts Roderick, one Oliver, one servant and the fourth one acts Henry Adams, then listen to the tape, pay more attention to the difference between American English and British English in pronunciation, stress, tone.
