Tips
Step 1 Warming up
  • Show the video Where did you go? to Ss. Ask them to answer the questions after listening the song:
  • What did the girl do on her holiday?
  • How did the boy hurt his foot?
  • Ask Ss to talk freely about their vacations. T can use the prompts:
  • Where did you go on vacation?
  • What did you do on your vacation?
  • Did you have a good time?
  • Lead in
  • Give Ss some sample conversations about where different people went on their vacations. Ss can have a perception of how to talk about past events using the simple past tense.
  • Brainstorm
  • Ask Ss to answer the question: Can you say other activities you did on your summer vacation? T can give Ss some inspirations, e.g. visited museums, went to summer camp, went fishing, visited families and went sightseeing.
Step 2Presentation & Practice
  • Pre-listening
  • 1a
  • Before Ss do this activity, T may want to review vocabulary using the picture. Write on the board:
  • What are the students wearing?
  • What are the students doing now?
  • (Tip: T can do this activity as a class or have Ss do this alone or in pairs first before doing the activity as a class.)
  • Show Ss the translation of the phrases in 1a. Make sure all the Ss understand the meaning of all the phrases.
  • Answers: 1. f  2. b  3. g  4. d  5. c  6. a  7. e
  • While-listening
  • 1b
  • Ask Ss to listen and number the people in the picture.
  • T may want to point out some tricks that Ss can use before listening to the recording: 1. Not all of the people in the picture are numbered, so Ss should focus more on listening for the activities of the people who are numbered. 2. Ss can also limit the possible choices of their answers by noting whether the name is male or female.
  • Answers: 1. Tina (went to the mountains)  2. Xiang Hua (went to New York city)  3. Sally (stayed at home)  4. Bob (visited his uncle)  5. Tom (went to summer camp)
  • Play the recording again and ask Ss to listen for more details about the conversations.
  • Answers: family, stayed, fishing, friends
  • Show the video of 1b to Ss.
  • Post-listening
  • 1c
  • Ask Ss to make conversations about the people in the picture.
  • After Ss have practiced in pairs for a while, T may want to have one of the Ss close the textbook and answer the questions of the other S who has an open textbook.
  • Ask Ss to make conversations about their own vacations following the example in 1c.
  • Ss should practice the simple past tense in their conversations.
  • Show PPT P22 to Ss. Ask them to do a survey about their classmates’ vacations and then make a report for the whole class.
Step 3Language points learning
  • 复习一般过去时的动词变化规则: 1. 一般情况下直接在动词后面加-ed  2. 以e结尾的动词后面加-d  3. 以重读闭音节结尾,末尾只有一个辅音字母的动词,双写该辅音字母,再加-ed  4. 以辅音字母加y结尾的动词,变y为i,再加-ed  5. 不规则变化请学生参考不规则动词表
  • Where did you go on vacation? 是一个特殊疑问句。由“特殊疑问词+助动词+主语+动词原形+其他?”构成。由于是询问已发生的动作(过去的事情),所以助动词用过去式did,其后的动词用原形。
  • stay可以作及物动词,也可以作不及物动词。当它作不及
  • 物动词时就不能直接接宾语,其后接相应的介词短语,表
  • 地点或表状态。
  • I visited my uncle.  ①句中visit是及物动词,后直接跟宾语,当其后接表示人的词语时译为“拜访”。当其后接表示地点的名词时,译为“参观”。②visit还可以作名词“拜访,参观”,构成短语pay a visit to … / be on a visit to … 译为“访问(某人)” “参观(某地)”。

  • Ask Ss to do the exercises from PPT P29-30.
  • Homework:
  • Preview the conversation in 2d.
  • Do the exercises in students’ book.     
Teaching Reflection
This is the first period of the unit. The topic of the unit is about “holidays and vacations” and we talk about past events. Its necessary for the students to learn how to use simple past tense of regular and irregular verbs. And we will help the students to master the simple past tense by practicing listening and speaking, usingwhat, where, who, how, when to make conversations. Meanwhile, we can create some situations to help them to use indefinite pronouns correctly. And they can improve their listening and speaking skills by communicating with partners.
