Unit 4 Whats the best movie theater?
Section A(2a-2d)
Teaching Aims

  • Language goals
  •      Learn the target structure in listening and speaking.
  • Key words and phrases
  • theater, comfortable, seat, screen, close, ticket, movie theater,   
  • close to home.
  • Key sentences
  •      1.What's the best movie theater?
  •      2. It has the biggest screens.
  •      3. But I think Moon Theater has the most comfortable seats.

Tips
Step 1 Revision & Lead in
  • The T can present Chinese meanings of the learned expressions and elicit Ss to write them in English.
  • Then the T can have Ss talk about the following questions to lead into the listening tasks.
  • 1. Did you buy clothes during the National holiday(国庆期间)?
  • 2. Which clothes store did you choose?
  • 3. Why did you go there?

Step 2 Presentation & Practice
  • Listening carefully and understanding questions being asked can help Ss to more approximately express their opinions. The T may want to have Ss close their textbooks and listen only for the questions of the reporter before they do activities 2a and 2b.
  • Explain to Ss that they will hear an interview between a reporter and a boy.
  • Instruct Ss to listen and write down the questions asked by the reporter.
  • 2a  
  • The activity is to give Ss listening practice with the target language. At the beginning, the T play the recording for the first time and make Ss to finish the task in 2a individually. Then the T can invite some Ss to share their answers in class to check answers.
  • Answers:
  • a. Miller’s     2. c.107.9FM      
  • 2b
  •     The activity is to give Ss practice in listening for specific items in conversations. Ss can be asked to read the sentences in 2b and get the requirement of the activity. Then the T can play the recording for the second time and ask Ss to finish the task individually.Then Ss can check answers in pairs. The T can invite Ss to say the full sentences to make sure they get the correct answers.
  • S1: Blue Moon is the most expensive.
  • S2: Miller’s has the best clothes.
  • S3:Dream Clothes is the worst store.
  • ...:
  • Answers:
  • Clothes store: Blue Moon, Miller’s, Dream Clothes, Miller’s
  • Radio stations: 970 AM, 97.9 FM, 107.9 FM, 97.9 FM
  • After listening , the T can present the listening material to the students in need to help them get the specific information about the conversation. The T can play the recording again and ask Ss to imitate the intonation and pronunciation.
  • Optional approach:
  • The T may want to take a class poll to see how many Ss agree abut local clothing stores and radio stations.
  • Elicit from Ss the names o f some local radio stations and clothing    stores.
  • Ask Ss to vote for the radio station and the clothing store that they like best.
  • Elicit from Ss the reasons for their preferences and write the key vocabulary on the board.

  • 2c  
  • This activity is to give Ss the opportunity to use the target language in conversations. The T may want to remind Ss that reporters can sometimes pretend to be very charming to help make people trust them and want to answer their questions. Elicit from Ss how they can be friendly, charming, or how they can show interest in someone so that they can elicit a trusting response. Write these ideas on the board. Encourage Ss to act accordingly in the role of the reporter.
  • Ss can be asked to read the model conversation in 2c in chorus. The
  • T can pay attention to their pronunciation and intonation. Then Ss
  • make their own conversations with partners. At last the T can invite some to role-play their conversations as open pairs.
Step 3 Presentation & Reading
  • 2d  
  • Before reading, the T can introduce the context of the conversation like this:Greg is new in town. Here is a dialogue between Greg and Helen, one of his warm-hearted neighbors.
  • The T can ask Ss to read the conversation quickly and try to answer the following questions to make sure Ss get the main idea:
  • 1. What is Greg’s problem?
  • 2. What does Helen tell him about the town?
  • 2d  
  • Then the T can focus Ss’ attention on the target structure appeared in the conversation and other key word groups. Ss can be asked to make sentences using the key structure and phrases.Then the T can make Ss read the conversation in chorus to check their pronunciation and intonation. At last the T can invite some Ss to role-play the conversation as open pairs.
Step 4 Language points
  • worst / wɜ:(r)st / adj. & adv. 最差(的);最坏(的);最糟(的)
worst是形容词bad,ill及副词badly的最高级。
worse是形容词bad,ill及副词badly的比较级。
  • cheaply /'tʃi:pli/ adv. 便宜地
cheap -cheaper-the cheapest
cheaply -more cheaply-the most cheaply
  • choose /tʃuːz/ v.选择,挑选    chose(过去式)
choose...as 选…choose...from 从……中选择…当
choose...from 从……中选择
choose sb. to do sth. 挑选某人去做某事
choose (not) to do sth. 决定(不)做某事
  • n. choice“ 选择”, make a choice “做出选择”。

Step 5  Summary & Homework
  • Summary  The T can encourage Ss to summarize the key points of this class to help Ss consolidate the knowledge.
  • Homework:
  •     Read and recite the conversation in 2d.
  • Do the exercises in students’ book.     
Teaching Reflection
  • In this period, there are more new words and expressions. The T should provide more practice in listening and speaking and encourage Ss to be more involved.The teacher should get them to learn the main structure-the superlative forms and get the students to practice it in listening and speaking. In the reading part, Ss can experience more practice in using the target language in natural speech.
