Tips
Step 1 Warming up
  • Free Talk
  • Ask Ss to work in groups of four and talk about the questions:
  • Do you like watching TV?
  • What's your favorite TV show?
  • (Tip: T can provide some English expressions about TV shows to Ss. E.g. cartoon, talk show, soap opera, sports show, sitcom, game show, talent show, news. If possible, T can show Ss some real pictures of these shows.)
  • Pair work
  • Work in pairs, ask Ss to share their feelings about different TV shows with their partner.
  • (Tip: T can invite two or three pairs to perform in front of the class.)
Step 2Presentation & Practice
  • Pre-listening
  • 1a
  • Ask Ss to look at the pictures in 1a, the match the TV shows with the pictures.
  • Answers: 1. e  2. d  3. b  4. c  5. a  6. g  7. f
  • While-listening
  • 1b
  • Ask Ss to listen to the conversation, then number the shows[1-4] in order.
  • Answers: 3. talent show 1. talk show 4. soccer game 5. news
  • After finishing the activity in 1b, play the recording again, ask Ss to listen for more details. T can use these prompts:
  • Which show is after the news?
  • What time does the soccer game start?
  • What does Jack think of the new talent show?
  • Do they want to watch the soccer game?
  • Show the listening material, ask Ss to role-play the conversation.
  • 1c
  • Show the sample conversation to Ss, tell Ss that they need to work in pairs and make their own conversation following the sample. T can invite two or three pairs to perform their conversations in front of the class after all the Ss have finished.
  • T can give Ss more examples (PPT P16-P18) about the conversation when necessary.
  • Discussion
  • Step 1: Ask Ss if they know the idiom “couch potato”.
  • Step 2: Show Ss a picture of “couch potato” and explain what a couch potato is.
  • Step 3: T can ask Ss to think if anybody in their family is a couch potato.
Step 3Language points learning
  • want to do sth. “想要做……”, want sth. “想要某物”, want sb. to do sth. “想要某人做某事”
  • What do you think of ...? “你认为......怎么样?”, 用于谈论对某事物的喜好程度,可选择的回答有:
  • I like it. / I don’t mind it. / I don’t like it.
  • I can’t stand it. / I like it very much./I love it.
  • It’s interesting. / They’re fantastic. ...
  • think的意思是“想,考虑,思索”(v.) 可以和许多介词搭配, 组成新的意思。例如:
  • think of  “考虑”,“有......的看法”,“想”,有时等同于think about。
  • think highly of sb. / sth. 对某人或某物评价甚高
  • think ill of sb. 对某人不怀好感
  • think about  “考虑” (指计划, 观念, 看它是否相宜、可行)
  • think over  “反复思考;仔细考虑”
  • mind  v. 介意,作及物动词时,后面通常接名词、代词、 V-ing形式、复合结构、从句等。mind的常见句型有:
  • Would you mind (sb. / sb.’s) doing sth.?
  • 你介意(某人)做某事吗?
  • Would you mind if sb. do / does sth.?
  • 如果某人做某事,你介意吗?
  • 在I can’t stand it!这句话中,stand表示“顺利接受;忍耐、忍受” (多用于否定句、疑问句) , 后可接动名词。

  • Ask Ss to do the exercises from PPT P28-29.
  • Homework:
  • Preview the conversation in 2d.
  • Do the exercises in students’ book.   
Teaching Reflection
In the first period, through the study of 1a—1c, the students are guided to use the pair practice method for preliminary language practice. The topic of this unit is about Entertainment. The students must learn to talk about preferences and make plans. So the teacher should encourage the students to talk about what kind of movies or TV shows they like and they don't like. It helps to cultivate students' ability to use the target language for communication.
