Unit 3 Could you please tell me where the restrooms are?
Section A(3a-3b)
Teaching Aims

  • Language goals
  •    Learn the usage of the objective clauses with wh- questions.
  • Key words and phrases
  •    suggest, pass by, staff, scary, scared, on one’s way to.  
  • Key sentences
  •    1. I wonder where we should go next.
  •    2. You never know until you try something!
  •    3. Do you know where we can get some good food quickly?
  •    4. Could you tell us when the band starts playing this evening?

Teaching Difficulties
  • Practice the target structure in reading comprehension.
  • Learn to ask for information politely and how to respond.

Tips
Step 1 Lead in
  • The T can play a video about the amusement park. Ss will learn   
  • some related words and phrases so that they can prepare well for the following activities.
  • Then the T may present some pictures of amusement parks to elicit discussions from Ss:
  • Have you ever been to an amusement park?
  • What do you think of it?
  • The T can present some pictures of different rides in amusement parks and elicit the English names of them from Ss. The Ss can share their experiences of going to amusement parks or theme parks. The T can ask them if they were excited or scared to try these rides .
Step 2 Presentation & Reading
  • Before-reading  
  • The T can ask Ss to talk about the title and the picture in 3a. The T can use these prompts:
  • 1. What can people do at Fun Times Park?
  • 2. Do people always enjoy themselves there?
  • 3. Which word or words in the title tell us that they always enjoy themselves?
  • 4. What word would you think of to describe that ride shown in the picture?
  • 5. Do you want to be on that ride? Why or why not?
  • While-reading
  •     Task 1 Skimming and counting  
  • The T can ask Ss to read the conversation in 3a quickly and count how many scenes(场景) in this conversation so that Ss can grasp the main idea of the conversation.
  • Scene 1: In Space World  
  • Scene 2: After the ride…
  • Scene 3: On the way to Water City Restaurant…
  • Scene 4: Walk up to a staff person at the door
  •     Task 2-6  Scanning  
  • The T can guide Ss to read each scene carefully and finish the tasks about each scene. Focus Ss’ attention on the details and the key points. Then the T can present the answers.
  • 3a
  • The T make Ss read the conversation again and the Ss finish the task in 3a. Then the T present the correct answers.
  •    Answers:
  • Because she was afraid.
  • She found the ride fun and she was glad that she tried it.
  • A rock band plays there every evening.
  • Yes. The restaurant is always busy, so they should get there early to get a table.
  • 3a      
  • The T can also ask more questions to check if check if Ss’ understanding. The following questions are only for reference:
  • 1. What did He Wei suggest Alice do if Alice is scared during the ride?
  • 2. Did Alice try the ride? How do you know?
  • 3. What will they do after the ride?
  • 4. Where will they have dinner?Why?

  • 3a
  •     The T can ask Ss to read the conversation for consolidation. This time, the T can make girls read the words of Alice and the boy read the words of He Wei to role play the conversation.
  • 3b  
  • The activity is to teach Ss to ask a question or make a statement in different ways. The T may ask Ss to finish the task with the help of the following expressions:
  • I wonder...
  • Could you please tell me...?
  • I’d like to know...?
  • Do you know...?
  • Have you any idea...?
  • Would you mind telling me...?
  • Suggested answers:
  • 1. Do you know where we can get some good food quickly?
  •     I wonder where we can get some good food quickly.
  • 2. Excuse me, could you tell us when the band starts playing this evening?
  •     We’d like to know when the band starts playing this evening.
  • 3. Do you want to go to Water World now?
  •   Would you like to go to Water World now?

  • After all the activities , the T can also develop the Ss’ skills of paraphrasing to help students improve the accuracy of reading comprehension questions. The T can use these prompts:
  • You should try first before you give up.(You never know until you try something:
  • I want to eat something. (I’m getting hungry.)
  • You don’t have to worry too much. (Come on!)
  • There are always lots of people.(The restaurant is always busy.)
  •   I suggest we not eat now but return to eat after we do something else.(Why don’t we come back here for dinner later?)

Step 3Language points learning
  • promise+(that) 宾语从句
  • promise sb. sth. 承诺某人某事
  • promise (not)to do sth. 承诺(不)做某事
  • promise 还可以做名词 ,"承诺,诺言"。
  • keep a promise 遵守诺言   
  • break a promise 违背诺言

  • suggest v.建议;提议   常用结构:
  • suggest sth. (to sb.)    (向某人) 建议某事
  • suggest (one’s ) doing sth.       建议(某人)做某事
  • suggest+ that 从句      建议……(从句要用虚拟语气,即谓语                                                       用“(should+)动词原形”)
  • 注意:“建议某人做某事”不能用suggest sb. to do sth. ,而用advise sb. to do sth. 。
  • staff属集体名词。它既可看作单数,又可看作复数。当其强调整体时,谓语动词用单数形式;当其强调个体时,谓语动词用复数形式。常见的集体名词还有:police(警察),army(军队),class(班级),family(家庭),team(小组)等。

Step 5  Summary & Homework
The homework can vary with the specific conditions.
  • Summary  The T can encourage Ss to summarize the key points of this class to help Ss consolidate the knowledge.
  • Homework:
  •     Read and recite the passage in 3a.
  • Do the exercises in students’ book.  
  •    
Teaching Reflection
  • In this period, we should practice the target language more in reading and speaking activities. Besides, we can set some suitable tasks to help students do the reading comprehension in order to improve their reading skills.And students should know the main structure in this unit.Remind them of the differences between a special question and a polite question which usually has an objective clause.
