Unit 4 I used to be afraid of the dark.
Section B(3a-Self Check)
Teaching Aims

  • 1. The mother traveled for many hours to return home to talk to her child in person.

Teaching Difficulties
Some s may be using the same answers for various activities in this unit. T can encourage Ss by saying that they may be young, but while they were growing up, they must have experienced various changes in their lives.

Teaching Procedures
Tips
Step 1 Warming up
  • Guess game
  • step 1: T thinks of one S in his / her mind and tells everyone the gender of the S.
  • Step 2: Ss ask questions about the chosen one using the sentence structure “Did he / she use to ...?”
  • Step 3: T can only answer the questions using “yes” or “no”.
  • Step 4: Ss guess who he / she is.
  • (Tip: T can let Ss know that a person may have a lot of change with the time passing by.)
Step 2 Presentation & Practice
在warm up的活动中老师可以总结随着时间的推移一个人会发生很多变化,在PPTP7的活动中,老师可以以自身的变化为范例,利用P7的给出的句子作为示范,从外貌、性格和爱好三方面阐述自己的变化,这也是为3b部分的写作给学生做口头示范。
  • Pre-writing
  • T can tell Ss that a lot changes have taken place for himself/herself in the past few years.
  • T can describe his/her changes from three aspects: appearance, personality and hobbies.
  • 3a
  • Encourage Ss to write down three changes (in appearance, personality and hobbies) that they haven’t talked about before. Then ask them to talk with a partner about their changes.
  • (Tip: T can also encourage Ss to make a conversation and talk about their changes following the example on PPT P9.)
  • While-writing
  • 3b
  • Show and explain the instruction about the writing task to Ss.
  • Encourage Ss to write two paragraphs. Tell Ss that they can incorporate the three changes from 3a but they can also include more changes to make their piece more interesting.
  • (Tip: T can show Ss the sample writing to give them more idea.)
  • Post-writing
  • Divide Ss into several groups, ask Ss to read their passages in the group one by one. Ask each group to vote for the best passage, then invite the S who wrote the “best passage” to read his/her passage for the class.
  • Self Check
  • Exercise 1
  • Ask Ss to fill in the blanks with the correct forms of the words in the box.

  • Exercise 2
  • Ask Ss to think about what they used to be like when they were in primary school. Encourage Ss to come up with different answers.
  • Suggested answers: 1.I used to wear smaller sized clothes. 2.My hair used to be curly. 3.I used to watch cartoons. 4.I used to play hide and seek. 5. I used to be short.
  • Step 3 Summary & Homework

  • Summary
  • Ask Ss to do the exercises from PPT P17-20.
  • Homework
  • Preview 1a-1c in Unit 5.
  • Do the exercises in students’ book.
Teaching Reflection
  • In the last period of the unit, we pay enough attention to writing practice. Try to get the students to use what they have learned in the unit. The teacher should help the students to sum up all the words and expressions they have learned. Give examples to them and let them have enough time to practice. They must do a lot of work to practice words and expressions to talk about how they have changed. They have to finish the work by themselves.
