| Step 1 Lead in
| | - The T can present some pictures and introduce the importance of
- English and how useful this subject is! The T may use the prompts:
Lots of people are learning English.
Why?
- The T can choose several Ss to talk about the advantages of learning English well. The T can use some picture as prompts.
- The T can make Ss to talk about these questions as a lead-in:
- How do you learn English?
- Is it difficult for you to learn English?
- What things are difficult for you?
- What can we do in face of these difficulties?
| | Step 2Presentation & Practice
| | - Ss finish the task in 1a according to their own studying facts. Then
- talk about the problems with their partners. They can try to give advice to each other.
- Ss finish the task in 1b . Then the T can invite some Ss to share their problems with class and give advice to help solve their problems. For example:
- S1: I can’t pronounce some of the words.
- T: Well, some English words can be really difficult to read. You could
- ask your classmates or me for help. Another good way is by listening
- to a tape at home and often repeating the difficult words and sentences.
- (Note: The T’s words can be the same with the words which will appear in the following listening tasks so that the following tasks will be easier for some Ss. )
- Suggested answers: I can’t understand English movies.
- I want to read English books but I don’t know what to read.
- I don’t understand native speakers of English.
- I’m nervous when I try to speak English
- When I read an English book, I have to keep looking up unfamiliar words in my dictionary and it’s not fun.
- Then the T can answer less and invite some good English learners in class to give advice for the problems so that every student can be involved in the task.
- Before-listening, the T can ask Ss to predict the problems according to the challenges listed in 1c. At the same time , the T can provide some related expressions on the board for reference:
- pronunciation/spelling/grammar/sentence/word
- forget/misspell/misunderstand
- hear/understand/ concentrate/follow
- listening/speaking/reading/writing
- While-listening, the T can play the recording for the first time to give Ss listening practice in the target language used in natural speech. Then the T can present the correct answers.
- Answer : 1.pronunciation 2.forgets 3. understand 4.writing
- While-listening, the T may play the recording a second time to give
- Ss the opportunity to listen for details and take notes. Then the T can invite some Ss to share their answers and make some assessment.
- Answer : 1.Listening 2. write the new words

- After-listening, the T may ask more detailed questions about the listening material to check if Ss has completely understood the conversation:
- 1.What’s Paul’s first problem?
- A. He can’t get the pronunciation right.
- B. He always forgets the new words.
- C. He doesn’t get much writing practice.
- 2. When does the English club meet?
- A. On Tuesdays and Fridays.
- B. On Wednesdays and Fridays.
- C. On Tuesdays and Thursdays.
- To provide Ss with speaking practice using the target language, the T many conduct this speaking activity in two stages.
- Stage1: 1. Invite two Ss to read aloud the given conversation.
- Have Ss role-play in pairs using information in 1c and 1d.
- Stage2: 1. Ask each pair to join another pair to form groups of four..
- 2.This time, Ss are to role-play similar conversations using the information in 1a and 1b.
- A: I forget a lot of new words.
- B: Maybe you should write the new words in your notebook and

| In this period,the students should try to express their English learning problems and give advice to others when they have difficulties in learning.The teacher should get the students to practice the target language in listening and speaking.They will improve their capacity of language organization and oral output while listening and speaking practice.We always believe that students must write something after they have learned the new items.So we give them some written work to do after they do the listening practice and make conversations.
