Louis Braille was born in France in 1809. Sadly when he was a little boy, he had an accident. By the time he was four years old, he was completely blind. However, at the age of ten, Louis was lucky enough to go to one of the first schools for blind children in Paris. At this particular school they had special books. They were written in ordinary French but the letters raised up off the page, so that the students could feel the shape of the words and read them. But there were two problems with this system. First, the letters were huge and difficult to read. Second, the books were very expensive so the school library only had fourteen altogether. Louis, who was very clever and creative, thought of a better way to improve books for blind people to read.
In 1821, when Louis was twelve years old, a soldier came to his school. This man had invented a system for soldiers to send and receive messages in the dark. Although this idea had not worked very well, Louis became very excited and began experiments with it. By the time he was fifteen, he had invented a system which used only six dots. And by 1827 the first book using his system was published.
It still took a long time before people realized what a wonderful invention Braille’s system was. In fact, Louis died in 1852 and did not live to see the success of his system, which has been adapted to almost every language in the world. Thanks to him, blind or weak-sighted people are able to read or write as well as any sighted person.
24. What did books for the blind look like when Louis was a boy?
A. No books designed for the blind.
B. Books with raised dots on each page.
C. Books with letters raised up off each page.
D. The same books as those for the able-bodied.
25. What led Louis to invent a reading system for the blind?
A. The letters were huge and difficult to read.
B. Books designed for the blind were too costly.
C. The number of books for the blind was very small.
D. A messaging system for soldiers to use in the dark.
26. When did Louis eventually perfect the reading system?
A. In 1821            B. In 1824     C. In 1827               D. In 1852
27. According to the last paragraph, what significance does Louis Braille’s reading system have?
A. It helps make the blind independent to learn.
B. It is easy and convenient for the blind to live.
C. It has been adapted to every language in the world.
D. It contributes to producing more books for the blind.

On a bright early summer morning, many young swimmers gather at a local swimming pool in the state of Maryland. They are members of a competitive summer swim team, and that’s a regular part of their daily life. As they train and cut seconds off their times, which makes them closer to the championship in the following large-scale (大规模的) competitions, they are getting lots of physical exercise and vitamin D from the sun. However, the benefits of belonging to a sports team are not just honor or health related. You can learn useful life skills.
Paul Waas, coach of the swim team, explains, “The discipline (自制力) comes into play when you’re talking about concentrating on the details that your coaches are saying as it makes you faster rather than going up and down the pool the same way you have every time. When you focus on what you’re doing right and what you can do better, then you’ll see the improvement.”
Besides, there is also responsibility, goals and workings within a group. Again, here is Coach Waas. “It’s really great! It’s so fun to watch from year to year. I’ve had kids who as 7-year-olds on the team could barely pay attention in practice and were only interested in who was going first. Now they’ve come back as 8-year-olds, having set some goals and having things that they want to achieve. These skills can help them a lot.”
But playing the sports is not without harm. Some can be hard on the body. Young athletes suffer serious injuries that follow them into adulthood. Coach Waas says that in fact, swimming is different from most others. First, it poses a lower risk of injury. The second one relates to how swim teams are structured. Actually, children are not the only ones who can benefit. Adults can also benefit from team sports.
28. Why do the swimmers gather at a swimming pool in the early morning?
A. To obtain vitamin D from the sun.        B. To build practical skills for future.
C. To join in a large-scale competitive.        D. To carry out their routine practice.
29. What do Paul Waas’ words imply in paragraph 2?
A. Swimmers should concentrate on details.
B. Members get disciplined and focused in the team.
C. Coaches play a key role in layers’ improvement.
D. Most swimmers enjoy sinning in the same way.
30. What happens to the kids after a year’s training?
A. They are more aware of what to do.        B. They pay less attention to training.
C. They devote more time to practice.        D. They care more about who goes first.
31. What does the author want to convey in the text?
A. Exercise benefits everyone.        B. Swimming is better than other sports.
C. Team sports teach life lessons.        D. Physical exercise should be a habit.
D
A world-famous Canadian author, Margaret Atwood, has created the world’s first long-distance signing (签字) device, the Long Pen.
After many tiring book signing tours from city to city, Atwood thought there must be a better way to do them. She hired some technical experts and started her own company in 2004. Together they designed the Long Pen. Here’s how it works: The author writes a personal message and signature on a computer tablet (手写板) using a special pen. On the receiving end, in another city, a robotic arm fitted with a regular pen signs the book. The author and fan can talk with each other via web cameras and computer screens.
Work on the Long Pen began in Atwood’s basement. At first, they had no idea it would be as hard as it turned out to be. The device went through several versions, including one that actually had smoke coming out of it. The inventing finally completed, test runs were made in Ottawa, and the Long Pen was officially launched at the 2006 London Book Fair. From here, Atwood conducted two transatlantic book signings of her latest book for fans in Toronto and New York City.
The Long Pen produces a unique signature each time because it copies the movement of the author in real time. It has several other potential applications. It could increase credit card security and allow people to sign contracts from another province. The video exchange between signer and receiver can be recorded on DVD for proof when legal documents are used.
“It’s really fun,” said the owner of a bookstore, who was present for one of the test runs. “Obviously you can’t shake hands with the author, but there are chances for a connection that you don’t get from a regular book signing.”
The response to the invention hasn’t been all favorable. Atwood has received criticism from authors who think she’s trying to end book tours. But she said, “It will be possible to go to places that you never got sent to before because the publishers couldn’t afford it.”
32. Why did Atwood decide to invent the Long Pen?
A. To set up her own company.        B. To win herself greater popularity.
C. To make book signings less tiring.        D. To write her books in a new way.
33. How does the Long Pen work?
A. It signs a book while receiving the author’s signature.
B. The fan uses it to copy the author’s signature himself.
C. It copies the author’s signature and prints it on a book.
D. The web camera sends the author’s signature to another city.
34. What do we know about the invention of the Long Pen?
A. The basement caught fire by accident.
B. Some versions failed before its test run.
C. It has been completed but not put into use.
D. The designers were well-prepared for the difficulty.
35. What could be inferred from Paragraph 5 and 6?
A. Atwood doesn’t mean to end book tours.
B. Critics think the Long Pen is of little use.
C. Bookstore owners don’t support the Long Pen.
D. Publishers dislike the Long Pen for its high cost.

How to manage your time
For many high school students it seems that there is never enough time. There are several steps you can take to organize your time better.
First, make a to-do list every day. It makes it easy to plan any activities or meetings you may have in addition to homework. Be sure to set priorities(优先的事物).    36
Use spare time wisely. Do you have time for self-study? Instead of wasting that time, read a book or do homework.       37    If a friend asks you to do something and you have homework to do, realize which is more important and see your friend later.
Decide on the time that is good for you to do certain things. If you are more of a morning person, try getting up an hour earlier and do schoolwork before school. Review your notes every day.   38    If you spend a few minutes at the end of every day going over what you learned, it will mean less time studying when it is time for the exam.
39    Studies have shown that getting enough rest helps your memory. When you are tired, everything seems more difficult. It is best to stay on a regular sleeping cycle as much as possible.
Tell your friends and family about your work timetable. Explain that you will be working at certain times and ask them not to disturb you.   40    you can call your friends later.
A. Set goals for yourself.
B. Get a good night’s sleep.
C. Do the most important tasks first.
D. Also, do not be afraid to say “no”.
E. You should finish your task on time.
F. Don’t take phone calls during the time you set aside for work.
G. Don’t wait until just before a test to try and remember everything.
