My First Marathon(马拉松)
A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn’t do either well. He later informed me that I was "not athletic".
The idea that I was "not athletic" stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!
The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn’t even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.
Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces(鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted!
At mile 3, I passed a sign: "GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!"
By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21, I was starving!
As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.
Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels(世俗标签), I can now call myself a "marathon winner".

3. How was the author’s first marathon?
A. He made it. B. He quit halfway.
C. He got the first prize. D. He walked to the end.

B. A winner is one with a great effort of will.

The medal ceremonies at the Olympic Games are often as exciting to watch as the athletic events, and the history and facts behind the composition and design of the medals are interesting as well.
The first modern Olympics took place in 1896 in Athens, and the first-place athletes received a silver medal. Eight years later, at the 1904 Games in St. Louis, gold replaced silver as the first-place award. The 1904 Games were the first time gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded for the first, second and third place.
Each medal must be at least 60 mm in diameter and 3 mm thick, but the Olympic Committee of the hosting city can decide to make the medals larger. At the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City, the gold and silver medals were the heaviest ever created at the time. They were 84 mm in diameter and 10 mm thick and weighed 20 ounces.
The gold medal is not made entirely from gold. It must be 92.5% silver and plated with at least six grams of gold. The last time the first-place medals were made entirely out of gold was at the 1912 Games in Stockholm. The silver medal, which goes to the second-place finisher, is made of 92.5% silver and other base metals. The bronze medal is made of copper, zinc, tin and a very small amount of silver. It is awarded to the third-place finisher.
For the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, the back of the medal was inlaid(镶嵌) with a jade disk. Jade is important to Chinese culture as it represents beauty and excellence.

Research shows students learn better when they’re well nourished. Healthy eating has been linked to higher grades, better memory, faster information processing and improved health leading to better school attendance, according to registered dietitian Elisa Zied, author of Feed Your Family Right. On the contrary, unhealthy eating habits can negatively affect learning. Researchers have studied many areas related to eating and learning.
Skipping breakfast can have a negative impact on learning. A higher percentage of breakfast eaters passed a biology exam in one study of college students. It’s also important to eat a high-quality breakfast. In a study of students between the ages of twelve and thirteen, the average mark increased as breakfast quality improved.
Even with breakfast, the brain can run out of fuel before lunch. In one study of students between the ages of seven and nine, having a mid-morning snack improved memory. The children who ate a smaller breakfast and lunch but consumed a mid-morning snack experienced a smaller decline in immediate and delayed memory. Attention wasn’t affected, however. Zied recommends yogurt with blueberries; this fruit has been proven to be linked to better memory in studies. A hard-boiled egg is also a good snack choice.
Kids who eat healthily are more likely to attend school. Without proper nutrition and adequate calories, students often don’t have enough energy to power the brain, resulting in tiredness and learning problems. In fact, alertness(机敏) improved significantly in students eating breakfast in one study of high school students published in the journal Pediatrics.
A study of public school students published in the Journal of School Health linked high intake of sweetened drinks, such as sugary sodas, to lower scores in math tests. A diet high in junk food and sugary sodas is also linked to childhood obesity, which could result in lower cognitive(认知的) functioning, according to the Yale University research. On the other hand, students with healthy eating habits are less likely to be overweight and more likely to learn well.
1. What is an effective way for students to improve their memory?
A. Eating a big breakfast on a regular basis.
B. Staying away from junk food in daily life.
C. Eating something healthy at about 10:00 am
D. Adding yogurt with strawberries to their daily diet.
2. What can we learn from the fourth paragraph?
A. Students will have better attendance at school after eating healthily.
B. Students will have a good performance as long as they are well fed.
C. A high-quality breakfast will make a difference to students, learning.
D. Every student has a strong awareness of eating breakfast.
3. What would happen to students who eat much junk food?
A. They would become less confident at school.
B. They would grow too overweight to work out.
C. They would become unwilling to attend school.
D. They would fall behind other students at school.
4. What can be the best title for the text?
A. The impacts of eating habits on students’ learning
B. The advantages of healthy eating habits
C. Some suggestions on how to learn better
D. The link between diets and learning

Twins Coby and Cory Cotton, and their friends Garrett Hilbert, Cody Jones and Tyler Toney were roommates at Texas A&M University. One day Tyler bet Garrett that he could make a crazy overtheshoulder basketball shot. Tyler made the shot. Then the rest of the guys tried their own even crazier shots! Each of them was keen to perform better than the others. One of them set up a camera to photograph the action, he looked through the lens and commented, “Dude, perfect”.
Little did the friends know that their video, which they posted online, would go_viral. In just one week it hit 100,000 views. They decided to call their group “Dude Perfect” and began to try even harder tricky shots. Soon they had American talk shows asking to air their videos on TV.
Today, Dude Perfect tops the YouTube channel charts in the United States. In addition, the guys have their own cable TV series, The Dude Perfect Show, popular toys named after them, and an online store, featuring everything from Tshirts to backpacks. It is estimated that the group's annual earnings from YouTube alone are about US $2 million a year.

We get it: You're tired. You're busy. And your shoes are way over there. Excuses are OK sometimes, but not every day — and especially not today. So put on your sneakers, get up off the couch, and let us kick your excuses to the curb.
“I ... dislike ...panting (气喘)!”
Being really out of breath may mean you're trying too much too soon, which will kill your confidence. But you don't have to be huffing_and_puffing to get a workout. Active doesn't have to mean highintensity (高强度). It's just about moving.
“I hate exercise.”
It may seem unbearable, but you just have to get started. Exercise releases endorphins (your brain's own feelgood chemicals), which can be habitforming. What's the best exercise? The one you'll do regularly. So you may hate running. Don't run! Ride your bike or just dance. Even cleaning your room is active. As long as you're moving and getting your blood pumping, it counts. So get creative.
“I don't have time.”
You may not have lots of time to spare when you're busy with schoolwork, but we bet you can find 10 minutes. Bonus: An activity break will send oxygen to your brain, making you superalert (超级警觉的) and more creative too. Famous thinkers like Aristotle and Steve Jobs liked “walking meetings”, and you can follow in their footsteps by moving around while you brainstorm about a tough task or memorize your English vocabulary.
“I never see results!”
Even if you train with the help of a professional, you won't see results right away. But you will feel them almost immediately. Don't focus on how your body looks — focus on how you feel. Keep a journal of when you exercise (or don't) and how you feel that day: Stressed? Focused? Tired? When you start noticing the amazing effects of exercise, you'll have no excuses.
1. The underlined part “huffing and puffing” in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by “________”.
A. moving around B. breathing heavily
C. feeling confident D. wearing nice shoes
2. In the author's eyes, the best exercise is the one that ________.
A. is very relaxing B. you will stick to
C. produces good results D. you can spare time on
3. Steve Jobs is mentioned to prove that doing exercise ________.
A. is good for one's figure
B. is good for one's health
C. makes one much happier
D. makes one more productive
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Exercise excuses we are not buying
B. Benefits of regular physical activity
C. The best exercise and fitness routines
D. How to get started with an exercise plan
语篇解读:本文是一篇议论文。文章反驳了几种不运动的借口。
1. B 词义猜测题。由上文的“I ... dislike ... panting(气喘)!”及“Being really out of breath may mean you're trying too much too soon”以及下文的“highintensity (高强度)”可推断,画线部分意思是“气喘吁吁”。
2. B 细节理解题。由第三段中的“What's the best exercise? The one you'll do regularly.”可知,作者建议人们做任何自己能够坚持下去的运动项目。
3. D 推理判断题。由第四段中的“making you superalert (超级警觉的) and more creative too”及“Steve Jobs liked ‘walking meetings’, and you can follow in their footsteps by moving around while ...”可推断,乔布斯的例子是为了证明做运动可以使人们的工作效率更高。
4. A 标题归纳题。通读全文可知,文章列了四个不运动的借口并逐一反驳。故A项最适合作本文的标题。

There is such a thing as winning by too much. A final score of 1612 recently earned one winning coach of a Californian high school girls' basketball team a twogame suspension (停赛) for unsportsmanlike behavior.
“The game just got away from me. I didn't expect them to be that bad. I'm not trying to embarrass anybody,” Arroyo Valley Coach Michael Anderson told the San Bernardino Sun about the blowout against Bloomington. In the second half, he played substitutes instead of starters, who played when the game began.
Hmm. Calling your competitor “bad” probably isn't helping the cause.
Coaches from other local high schools have spoken against Anderson's tactics (战术) as well. Throughout the entire first half of the game, Anderson used a fullcourt press, a method of playing basketball in which one team puts pressure on the other team in all parts of the court, and eventually his team won by 103 points. Bloomington only scored 1 point.
“Let them score,” Cajon Coach Mark Lehman, who led his team to victory too, said. “I don't think anyone would have had a problem if it was 16150. But 1612? ... Why not put up defense?”
Bloomington dealt with the loss as well as they could.
“People shouldn't feel sorry for my team,”Coach Dale Chung said after the game. “They should feel sorry for his team, which isn't learning the game the right way.”
He said he was proud of his team, because the game would hardly affect them. However, he added, “But it should affect them a little.”
The suspension doesn't seem to have changed the team's tactics much. After the 159point win, Arroyo played against Indian Springs and won by 61 points.
“They responded as they usually do,” Arroyo's assistant coach Nick Anderson, 19, told the San Bernardino Sun of the 8019 win. He was filling in for his dad, who was suspended.
He said, “It's nothing different. We just have a different coach. We're still going to run our game plan, like we always do.”

Breakdancing is set to make its debut (首次亮相) as an Olympic sport at Paris 2024, Tony Estanguet, head of the Paris 2024 organizing committee, said on February 21. Skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing which have already been added to Tokyo 2020, have been invited to return in Paris.
Estanguet said the choices responded to a need to make the Olympics “more urban” and “more artistic”. “We have chosen to present the International Olympic Committee (IOC) with the four sports because they are creative, appealing to youth and completely in line with our vision. They reflect perfectly Paris 2024's identity.”
Breakdancing is an example of a sport “which can be played anywhere and anytime in urban and other environments”. It appeared at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires in the form of headtohead “battles”. In competitive breakdancing, “breakers” face off in “battles” against each other, either as individuals or teams. Breakdancers use a mix of physical and artistic skills combining elements from gymnastics or acrobatics (杂技).
The IOC had announced that the number of competitors at Paris 2024 would be restricted to 10,500, which limited the opportunity to add sports. But the organizers said the inclusion would not necessitate the construction of permanent facilities and would involve just 248 competitors, including 32 breakdancers. The surfing events are likely to be held in established surf centers such as Biarritz or Lacanau in southwest France.
The inclusion still needs to be rubberstamped by the IOC, which is expected to decide on which sports to add in Paris 2024 after Tokyo 2020.
1. What do we know about breakdancing?
A. It involves multiple skills.
B. It's limited to group competition.
C. It will show up in Paris 2024.
D. It never appeared in the world events.
2. Paris 2024 organizers have chosen the four sports because they ________.
A. attract young people
B. perfectly reflect Paris' identity
C. make Paris more urban and artistic
D. can be played anytime and anywhere
3. What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
A. 10,500 competitors will compete for the new sports.
B. More surf centers will be specially designed for Paris 2024.
C. The IOC will reject the proposal because of inadequate facilities.
D. The inclusion won't require additional competition space to be built.
4. Which is the closest in meaning to the underlined word “rubberstamped” in the last paragraph?
A. Approved. B. Canceled.
C. Submitted. D. Designed.

Roberto Clemente is the greatest baseball player of all time. He had an unbelievable batting average(击球率) in all seasons he played. Having won four batting titles, Gold Glove Awards twelve times, and a Most Valuable Player Award, he is certainly the best that ever played.
Besides being the best baseball player, Roberto Clemente was also a great man and a hero. In 1972, there was an earthquake in Nicaragua. On December 31 of that year, Clemente flew to Nicaragua to take supplies to the people. Almost immediately after takeoff, the plane crashed into the Caribbean Sea.
The best honors for Clemente came after he died. He was the first Latino voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. In 1999, the city of Pittsburgh, where he played baseball, renamed a bridge after him — a bridge that leads to the city's beautiful new stadium. No one summed up the life of Roberto Clemente and the baseball commissioner(总干事) when, at Clemente's Hall of Fame award ceremony, he said, “He was so great a man, as a leader and humanitarian, so great an inspiration to the young and to all in baseball, especially to the proud people of his homeland, Puerto Rico.” The commissioner further honored Clemente by creating a sportsmanship award in his name.

Before January 2005, young girls couldn't play soccer in Katutura, a black township in Namibia, Africa. They had no soccer balls, no playing field, no shoes, and no leader. Each day, girls and boys gathered at the Nordkamp Center after school. Most of the boys would play soccer in a nearby dirt field while the girls remained at the center to jump rope or read books.
Center director Mary Beth Gallagher loved soccer and knew that the girls would love it, too. So she organized a girls' team with players under the age of 12. She knew it would be the youngest girls' soccer team in the whole country. Because they had no other girls' teams to compete with, Mary Beth arranged matches against the boys' teams. The boys were bigger and stronger, but the girls didn't back down.
Soon news spread about the Nordkamp girls' team. An American soccer team from New York heard about them and immediately sent all their uniforms and shoes to their “soccer sisters”. When the bright orange uniforms arrived, the Nordkamp girls danced happily.
“You look like pumpkins,” Mary Beth said.
A girl's voice called out, “If we are pumpkins, we're beautiful pumpkins.”
With their new name the Pumpkins, the experienced team was ready for a big match.
On December 1,2006,the Pumpkins gathered and walked in a big orange line to a field near the Nordkamp Center. Their first opposing team laughed at the young players, but they didn't laugh for long. They quickly found out just how good the Pumpkins were. The Pumpkins beat that first team and then the next. These girls became famous, and their story was also encouraging to others in Namibia.
