Each time Chinese New Year is approaching, preparations are underway around the world. Here are some Chinatowns for those outside of China wishing to mark the day.
London
Although it may not be as large or as long-built as others, having only become a center for the Chinese community during the 1950s, London’s Chinatown is perfectly formed little firework that knows how to see in the year with a bang. Decorated with red lanterns, previous years have seen shows with acrobatics(杂技), martial arts(武术),dance and opera nearby.
San Francisco
San Francisco’s Chinatown is perhaps the most famous in the United States. The city was the main entry-point for Chinese who had crossed the Pacific to the USA during the early 19th century. Between the Grant Avenue and the Stockton Street, this historic area is a local treasure, attracting more visitors per year than the Golden Gate Bridge.
Bangkok
With an about 100-year-old history, the Thai capital’s Chinatown contains complex streets offering all kinds of tasty treats, clothes, toys and antiques. Sunday market days are such a good time to get the full atmosphere of the neighborhood. The area is also known for its gold dealers, whose shops line the road.
Mauritius
Found in Port Louis, this Mauritian Chinatown shows the island nation’s rich multicultural diversity. Established in the early years of the 20th century by settlers from China, its tiny shops and restaurants serve locals and visitors. During the Chinese Spring Festival, the most exciting sight is the Dragon Dances on Rue Royale when Chinese musicians and dancers perform the traditional lion dances through the streets.

It was a warm sunny spring morning. I had just finished driving my son to the sheltered workshop. I was rushing back home, zipping along the mountain roads that I know so well, with a thousand thoughts on my mind, with a ton of wishes and worries crowding around my brain. I wouldn't say that I was speeding but I wasn't driving as safely as I normally do either.
Suddenly, I saw a dark form in the road ahead. I stepped on the brakes and saw that it was a big black dog standing right in the road. I braked harder and came to a full stop. The dog just stood there looking at me in a strange sort of way. Then he shook his head disapprovingly and walked slowly off the road and up into the woods.
I drove away slowly wondering about that dog. Then for the first time that day I noticed the sunshine giving off the light green leaves of the trees. I noticed the butterflies floating above them. I noticed the birds hovering in the sky. For the first time that day I felt the Love of our Creator. I drove on with a clear mind and a warm heart thanking God for sending that dog to slow me down and to wake me up.
Looking back now I see I needed that reminder. I was getting too lost in my own life again to notice the real LIFE all around me. I needed to see again that life is short and I shouldn't rush through it. I needed to see that life is precious and I should cherish every second of it. I needed to see that life is beautiful and I should welcome that beauty into my heart, mind, and soul. I needed to see that life is LOVE. May you enjoy every second of it and may you add your own love to it as well.

27. What does the author mean in the end?

Keeping pace with teachers is a fine way to study English. Teachers are experienced and their plans are systematic. But remember to work in a way that suits you. It's important to learn from past mistakes as well. Keep a notebook to make a record of the mistakes you make — It'll help you avoid making the same ones later.
The time of life may be hard, but you're not alone. You may be busy studying, but you can show your care by calling your friends or sending short messages. Don't let your friendships die.
It's as important to live well as it is to study well. Going to bed no later than 11:30 pm is important. It puts you in the right mood for the next day. You needn't follow a special diet, but make sure you are eating nutritious meals each day.
The person who plays well studies well. Having a lot of schoolwork doesn't mean having to give up other activities. Playing basketball or having a talk with your classmates can relax yourself. Time out is not a waste of time but helps you study more efficiently.
Besides taking the College Entrance Examination, you have other choices for college. Some students even apply for studying abroad. Pay attention to the useful information you can find, whether it's from school, the news media or other sources.
28. What should you do if you want to keep your friendship fresh?
A. Have frequent talks with them.        B. Always have lunch with them.
C. Make them at some distance.        D. Keep connected by some means.
29. The third paragraph is mainly about________.
A. health        B. friendship        C. relaxation        D. study
30. What does the underlined phrase “Time out” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. An activity without a break.        B. Sleeping outdoors.
C. A pause from studying.        D. Studying outside.
31. Who is the passage mainly written for?
A. Headmasters.        B. Students.        C. Teachers.        D. Parents.
D
Usually in school or in clubs, children are told not to horse around-horsing around means “to act badly”. But in south London, there is a club that loves it when students horse around.
The Ebony Horse Club is a riding school for children from poor families. General Manager Naomi How gate runs the team that runs the school. With the help of volunteers, they give about 140 rides each week to children. They teach not only horseback riding but also important life skills.
The program’s eight horses have returned to their home after a long rest outside London in East Surrey. Across the road from housing for the poor, young people are again learning how to ride.
They begin by learning how to mount, or how to get on the horse. Then, they learn how to walk, jog, and finally keep the horses running slowly. These are specialized terms (专业术语) for how a horse walks or runs.
One of the club’s youngest riders is Shaddai Mcleod. The 9-year-old was very excited to be back in the saddle (马鞍). He rides after school. But he joins the team on Sundays to help in the yard. He said he gets great pleasure taking care of the horses: cleaning out the stables, tidying the horses, and measuring out their evening meals. His sister Zion is 13 and works just as hard as her brother. As she saddles up her favorite horse, Eddie, for her lesson, she says how lucky she is to be a member of the club.
Along with riding close to home, Ebony Horse Club members take day trips to clubs in the English countryside. One year ago, groups of children from the club had wonderful experiences. They also have traveled as far away as Sweden to ride horses.
The club has experienced an increase in children wanting to join. But it needs donations (捐赠) to keep running.

A. Drive the horse quickly.        B. Learn specialized terms.

And the choices don't stop there. Why not take the wheel yourself? Nowadays car rental is easy and inexpensive. Dad and Mom had got to go on a four-day business trip. They taught their elder son Daniel and younger daughter Jane how to feed and look after their dog, Spot, how to take good care of themselves—learning to cook if they could, or ordering pizza—with money left on the table—if they were busy, and told them to keep their rooms clean and tidy. They asked Daniel to be in charge.
On the very morning when the parents left, Mom kissed them and said to Daniel gently, “Young man, do take care of Spot and Jane.” Daniel promised, “I will, Mom.”
Too excited to fall asleep again, Daniel and Jane jumped out of bed, calling out each other to get up. Their pet dog, Spot, heard the similar voice and rushed in, with a ball in its mouth. Jane stuck() her head into Daniel’s room, “Spot got up an hour earlier. Let’s walk it.” Daniel said excitedly, “I’m coming, but, Jane, don’t forget to keep your room clean and tidy.” “I will.”
They ran with the dog in the yard and threw the ball away for Spot to bring it back. They had fun playing with Spot the whole morning. Washing Spot was slow and tiring as it was the first time they had done it. Then Daniel settled down to his homework while Jane did her reading with interest.
The following day, Jane begged her brother to order pizza for lunch. Daniel agreed excitedly, “We haven’t tasted that for long and we behave ourselves, right?”After a while, he added, “We should save money, too.” Within half an hour, they treated themselves to a big pizza. However, in the afternoon, Spot looked sick, lying lazily and unwilling to move. Daniel was concerned about the dog and took it to the pet clinic immediately with Jane as their parents had done.
