Step 1 Presentation & Practice
  • Presentation
  • Ask Ss to read the sentences in grammar focus. Circle the modal verbs in the sentences, tell Ss that they are going to learn to use the modal verbs to make invitations and talk about obligations in this lesson.

  • Grammar
  • 情态动词can表示邀请
  • 情态动词can除了表示能力、许可和猜测之外,还可以表示邀请。表示邀请时,could比can更礼貌、更委婉。can表示邀请时常用一般疑问句句式,结构为: Can + 主语 + 动词原形 + 其他?
  • 对于用情态动词can发出的邀请,回答时主要有两种情况:
  • 接受:① Sure / Yes, I’d love (like) to. 当然,我愿意。
  •       ② Sure / Of course. 当然。
  • 拒绝:① Sorry, I’m not available. 对不起,我没空。
  •       ② I’m sorry. I’m not free. I have to …
  • 抱歉,我没空,我不得不……
  •       ③ I’d love to, but I’m afraid I can’t. I must …
  •         我愿意,但是恐怕不行。我得……
  • 情态动词might的含义及用法
  • might表示推测,意为“可能”,语气缓和,较委婉,可能性低于may。
  • 它还可以表示推测,意为“可能”,语气缓和,较委婉,可能性低于may。
  • may是might的过去式, 意为“可能”。
  • 情态动词have to与must的用法
  • must 表示主观“必须”;have to表示客观客观需要,即
  • “不得不” 。

  • Ask Ss to complete the answers with might and one of the phrases in the box.
  • Answers:
  • 1. visit my grandparents.  
  • I might watch TV.  
  • I don’t know. I might finish it on the weekend.  
  • I’m not sure. I might go with my cousin.  
  • I’m not sure. I might have to practice the violin.
  • 3b
  • Ask Ss to complete the sentences using the words in the brackets.
  • Answers:
  • Inviting: Can you play tennis on Saturday?
  •   Accepting: Sure. That sounds great.
  • Inviting: Would you like to go to the movies on Friday?
  •   Refusing: Sorry, I can’t.
  •   Reason: I might have to go out with my parents.
  • Inviting: Can you hang out with us tonight?
  •   Refusing: Sorry, I’m not free.
  •   Reason: I must study for a test.
  • Inviting: Would you like to come to my birthday party?
  •   Accepting: Sure. I’d love to.
  • 3c
  • To make activity 3c more interesting, T may want to have Ss make the following chart, block out 10 of the 21 time periods and provide reasons for being busy during those blocked-out periods.

  • invite v. 意思是“邀请”,invite sb. to + a party/wedding ... 的意思是“邀请某人参加聚会/婚礼......”, invite sb. to do sth. 的意思是“邀请某人做某事”。
  • accept和receive的区别是:
  • accept表示主观上愿意接受,receive表示客观上收到,但不一定会接受。
  • refuse v. 意思是“拒绝”,与accept互为反义词。refuse to do sth. 的意思是“拒绝做某事”。

  • Ask Ss to do the exercises from PPT P19-21.

  • Preview the new words and phrases in  Section B (1a-1e).
  • Do the exercises in students’ book.
Teaching Reflection
In the this period, most students can do oral exercises under the guidance of the teacher, and some students can complete the sentences in 3b. The students must learn how to send, accept and refuse invitations. We always learn grammar when we have enough language knowledge. When dealing with grammar, we can get the students to conclude or sum up what they have learned in this unit. Through the grammar focus, the students can clearly review the knowledge structure of this class. After they learn the main structure, the students should practice in different activities. And we'd better give them some written work after speaking and reading.
